Wishbone playbook pdf

If the center has a man over him he will base him. If the nose guard is in-between the guard and center he will be blocked by the lineman he is closest to. This part is very simple… but the tackles have it difficult in some aspects. When the tackle blocks the first inside it can cut off any defensive flow that the defense is running. Now you can mix it up on the line, and completely bewilder defenders at what your next move is. For instance the gap between the center and right guard on 40 need to be split a little more against a 4 front to give the left guard time to block the tackle.

The same goes for On 56 the play side tight end needs to split just a little more to give the guard more time to hit the defensive end. If the defense picks up on this split scheme STOP.

Another thing on 40 41 is technique. The tight end should read the DE and make him overrun his assignment. If the DE goes inside the tight end should run him into the DT who is being scooped by the guard to make a pile.

The other lead blocking RB aims for the first man inside. This way the safety is the only one left to tackle the running back. On 42 43 , 26 37 , Blue 42 43 the play side running back needs to edge up a little more not so much parallel to the FB but closer to have a better start to the hole.

The number 2 and 3 running backs are standing up and the fullback is down in a 3-point stance. On option plays like 16 17 , 26 27 , 46 47 the line just needs to create havoc for the backside defenders aiding the play side.

If they are playing Robber coverage then forget about pitch and play out the option. On 16 17 the play side linemen reach up field. You can rename 18 19 to 54 55 or 14 15 if that helps the linemen blocking scheme. Remember that the running backs need to take a counter step. On 28 39 if the center is fast enough he can cut the DT so that both guard and tackle pull.

This would be used against the or on the strong side. Splits should be a little bit closer than normal. Deception and Power are the key elements in the wishbone. If any member of the defense is not sold on the fact that a certain person has the ball this offense can fail.

Defensive coordinators will scheme and figure innovative new ways to try and beat the wishbone and the line of scrimmage will be crowded in most of your games. What needs to happen is that you have to work on the option and deception factor of the wishbone. A team cannot prepare for an offense like this in 4 days. Find the cracks in their defense and there are always cracks and weaknesses , have people watch their defense and see what the scheme is, adjust to what they do and kick their ass.

Player and Gap Numbering: The numbering system is extremely simple and easy to remember. This will be explained in greater detail later on. Play Calling: The first number will be the person who runs or has the ball and the second number will be where we want that person to go.

Look at the hole… 5. After-huddle Calls Linemen In — The player blocks inside Out — The player blocks outside Dog — The play should go outside the tight end Tag — The guard and tackle double-team their man An after-huddle call is not an audible. Audibles: The audible system is very simple and easy to remember.

The 9 means that we want Blue 34 to become Blue Tight-End pass plays The tight end pass plays are a system of play-action passes where we send the tight end a certain route while faking a 44 45 play.

Sending both tight ends out is also possible. Right 79 below Lineman Blocking Scheme The double-tight end wishbone offense is very lineman friendly. Final Notes Deception and Power are the key elements in the wishbone. Chris Crabtree. George Williams. Joby Turner. Coach Brown. Shante E. Coach Big B. Ryan Trevino. Running Back 4 : The Running Back lined up to the right of the Fullback will have blocking responsibilities on this play. His job is to get to the line of scrimmage as quickly as possible and pick up the defensive end on the right side, who the Y let go.

His job is to try to block him down to the left, just like the other offensive linemen are doing. Running Back 3 : The Running Back lined up to the left of the Fullback serves as the main handoff option for the Quarterback. At the snap, he will take a bowed route to the right side of the field, aiming for in between the defensive end and the cornerback.

He will be ready for a pitch from the Quarterback. Quarterback: At the snap, the Quarterback will head directly down the right side of the line of scrimmage. He has two options on this play.

First, if he sees that the defensive end is crashing down the line of scrimmage toward him, he will pitch the ball to the Running Back 3.

If he sees the defensive end go cheat out to the right in anticipation of the pitch, he can decide to keep the ball himself and run upfield, through whatever hole the blockers have created. The Wishbone opens up holes in the passing game by lining up in similar formations and then making fakes to confuse the defense. Since we discussed a tight formation with the running play above, we'll break down a passing play with the same tight formation.

In this play, there will be motion before the snap so that the defensive personnel have to react and make changes. This will hopefully draw more defenders to the right side of the field, away from where the passing play is designed to go. While it is designed to gain medium-to-big yardage, there will be only one player running a route. Therefore, if he is not open, the quarterback will be forced to bring the ball down and run most of the time. Offensive L ine: At the snap of the ball, each of the offensive linemen will take a drop step back and go into pass-blocking formation.

They will take on whatever defenders come their way. Most of the time, that will mean the player who is lined up directly across from them on the line of scrimmage. Y: The Y will be a tight end again in this formation, lined up directly to the right of the offensive tackle. At the snap, he, too, will drop back in pass-blocking coverage. Fullback: The Fullback is the player who the Quarterback will send in motion at the snap. The idea is that the Fullback takes the motion slowly, and jogs a few steps directly to the right before the ball is snapped.

He does still need to be in close enough proximity to the Quarterback at the snap, though, as he will serve as a running decoy. After the fake handoff, his job is to block a linebacker from rushing. Running Back 3 : The Running Back lining up to the left of the formation will run toward the line of scrimmage to the left of the offensive tackle and behind the X. His job is to pick up the free defender who will be rushing the backfield. Running Back 4 : The Running Back lining up to the right of the formation will take a diagonal route to the line of scrimmage and block the defender on the outside of the formation -- most likely a cornerback.

X: The X will line up at or near the line of scrimmage to the left of the formation. At the snap, he will fake as if he is blocking. After a second or two, he will release and run a Go Route, directly downfield. He will be the Quarterback's primary passing target. Quarterback: After taking the snap from the Center, the Quarterback will bow out to his right and fake a handoff to the Fullback, who he sent in motion before the play started.
